Managing Emotions During Separation
• July 24, 2023
Separation and going through the family law process is extremely difficult emotionally and psychologically. The process of dividing time with children or separating property causes upheaval from normality.
The opportunity to start fresh and become independent is a major benefit to getting through it all and below there are a few tips to get through the hard times.
-
Don’t isolate yourself
Surround yourself with friends and family that you trust and can confide in. In some cases the family law process can be long and arduous but with a support network that can provide you with emotional support and can help distract you, you will be able to think clearly and make the best decisions for yourself and family.
-
Practice self-care
Taking time to do things that you enjoy and make you happy, whether that be alone or with you kids, friends or family. Read a book, go to a café and have lunch by yourself, meditate, listen to music, go for a walk, exercise. Every person has their activity that allows them to re-set, find yours and do not feel guilty to scheduling time to do it.
-
Look forward, not back
Never make a long-term decision on temporary emotions. In the moment it is hard to see a long-term perspective especially given separation is a monumental change for anyone who has been in a relationship. Losing sight of the future and what is to come can be hard where the present does not look promising. There will be tough times in the moment but keeping the big picture in view will hold you in good sted.
-
Seek help
As mentioned above, separation and disintegration of a family unit is devastating. The emotional and mental strain that it causes is inevitable however there are professionals that can help. There is often the stigma that seeking professional help means you are weak however the strength of character to speak to someone who can help in your darkest time is truly telling of your strength.
These tips are often easier said than done and keep in mind it is an extremely hard time in your life. Have grace for yourself and recognise when and how to take time for yourself.
